What is Disodium Phosphonomycin
Phosphomycin sodium binds to a bacterial cell wall synthetase, blocking the first step of the reaction in which the bacteria use the substance in question to synthesise the cell wall, thus acting as a bactericide. It has an antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Gonococcus, Proteus mirabilis, S. typhi, Serratia marcescens, most Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus faecalis, some indole-positive Aspergillus and some Klebsiella and Enterobacter spp. bacteria. Fosfomycin sodium is mainly used to treat infections of the urinary tract, urinary system, skin and soft tissues, respiratory tract and intestinal tract caused by sensitive gram-negative bacteria. It can also be used in combination with other antibiotics to treat serious infections caused by sensitive bacteria such as sepsis, lung and meningeal infections, peritonitis, uterine adnexitis, intrauterine infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, osteomyelitis, etc. It can also be used in combination with vancomycin to treat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections.
Function of Disodium Phosphonomycin
1. Disodium Phosphonomycin for the treatment of infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Proteus and Shigella.
2. Disodium phosphonomycin, also known as Fosfomycin, is an antibiotic produced by Streptomyces fradiae. It is used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections and to reduce nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity of platinum-containing anti-tumor agents. It is used for susceptibility studies of Klebsiella pneumoniae and to study in vitro susceptibility testing procedures for fosfomycin tromethamine
3. Prevents peptidoglycan synthesis by inhibiting MurA, an enzyme responsible for synthesizing N-acetylmuramic acid or NAM, a major component of peptidoglycan
