A vacuum refining furnace (VOD/VD) is mainly used for further refining the molten steel from induction furnace for primary metallurgy. This process is operated by setting a steel ladle inside of a vacuum tank.
Under vacuum condition, argon is blowing from the bottom of the steel ladle, while oxygen is blowing from the top. In this way, the pressure of Co (pco) occurring in the furnace can be reduced significantly. Meanwhile, the reaction of carbon and oxygen in the liquid steel can be improved. Consequently, carbon can be removed and chrome ingredient can be retained. The pco decrease process is called vacuum process. The VOD/VD furnace is the main equipment for refining to produce ultra-low carbon stainless steel and all kinds of high-grade alloy steel.
