MBR membrane, also known as membrane modules in membrane bio reactors, is a new type of wastewater treatment device that combines ultrafiltration and microfiltration membrane separation technology with bioreactors in wastewater treatment.
The working principle of MBR membrane
The working principle of MBR membrane is to use aerobic microorganisms in the reactor to degrade organic pollutants in wastewater, while using nitrifying bacteria in the reactor to convert ammonia nitrogen in the wastewater, in order to remove odors (mainly produced by ammonia nitrogen) produced in the wastewater. Finally, efficient solid-liquid separation of water is achieved through hollow fiber membranes. In MBR systems, membrane components serve as sludge water separation units, which can completely replace traditional secondary sedimentation tanks and achieve efficient and stable wastewater treatment.
Types of MBR membranes
The types of MBR membranes mainly include solid-liquid separation membranes, aeration membranes, and extraction membranes. Among them, solid-liquid separation membrane is the most widely used type, which can be divided into integrated membrane bioreactor, separated membrane bioreactor, and composite membrane bioreactor according to the different positions of membrane components and bioreactors.
• Solid liquid separation membrane: Solid organic matter is refluxed into the reactor through membrane components, and the treated organic water is discharged.
• Aeration membrane: using breathable dense membrane or microporous membrane to achieve bubble free aeration into the bioreactor while maintaining the gas partial pressure below the bubble point.
• Extraction membrane: Wastewater and activated sludge are separated by a membrane, with wastewater flowing inside the membrane and activated sludge containing specific bacteria flowing outside the membrane. Wastewater does not come into direct contact with microorganisms, and organic pollutants can be selectively degraded by microorganisms on the other side through a membrane.
Combination method of MBR membrane
According to the combination of membrane components and bioreactors, MBR membrane bioreactors can be divided into three basic types: separated, integrated, and composite.
• Split type: The membrane module and bioreactor are set separately. The mixed liquid in the bioreactor is pressurized by the circulation pump and sent to the filtration end of the membrane module. Under pressure, the liquid in the mixed liquid passes through the membrane to become system treated water; Solid substances, large molecular substances, etc. are trapped by the membrane and reflux back into the bioreactor with the concentrated solution.
• Integrated: The membrane module is placed inside the bioreactor. After entering the membrane bioreactor, most of the pollutants are removed by the activated sludge in the mixed solution, and then filtered out by the membrane under external pressure. This form eliminates the need for a mixed liquid circulation system and relies on suction to produce water, resulting in relatively low energy consumption; And it occupies a more compact space compared to the split type. However, the membrane flux is generally relatively low, making it prone to membrane fouling and difficult to clean and replace after fouling.
• Composite type: Formally, it also belongs to the integrated membrane bioreactor, but adding fillers inside the bioreactor changes certain characteristics of the reactor.
