HF has a distinct, pungent odor and reacts with sulfur trioxide, chlorosulfonic acid, halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, olefins, and hydrocarbons, producing ***-containing organic compounds. In water, it forms a highly corrosive, medium-intensity acid. It is extremely toxic, with the potential to cause severe skin ulceration. Careful handling is required due to its hazardous nature.
Inhalation of HF vapor can be fatal, necessitating strict safety protocols during use.
HF reacts with common metals, metal oxides, and hydroxides to form various metal fluoride salts, although less dramatically than hydrochloric acid. Gold, platinum, lead, paraffin, and certain plastics (such as polyethylene) are resistant and suitable for storage.
Strong Corrosiveness
HF erodes glass and silicates, producing gaseous silicon tetrafluoride, as shown in the reaction:
SiO2 + 4HF → H2O + SiF4 ↑
Due to this reactivity, HF cannot be stored in glass containers. It forms acid salts and is a monobasic acid capable of producing salts like NaHF2, KHF2, and NH4HF2, distinct from other halogen acids.
The Weak Acidity of Hydrofluoric Acid: Owing to the strong hydrogen-*** bond, HF does not completely ionize in water. Among hydrohalic acids, only HF is a weak acid with an ionization constant of 3.5 × 10^-4 and an apparent ionization degree of about 10% at 0.1 mol/L concentration. The ionization degree increases with concentration, unlike other weak electrolytes.
