Definition, Manufacturing Process and Technical Data of Extruder Screens
Definition of Extruder ScreensAn extruder screen, commonly referred to as a screen pack, is a woven wire filtration system that is formed to filter all contaminants out of the melted plastic. Extruder screens are a necessity for any extruder of polymer or plastic.
Extruder screens are available in both single-layer and multi-layer configurations, and both configurations can be made into specific shapes and sizes.
In case of the multi-layer configurations, extruder screens are multi-layer wire filtration systems that are welded together and made into specific shapes and sizes.
The shape and size of extruder screens shall be dictated by your extruding machines.
When you select technical specifications including the number of layer and micron rating (mesh opening size) for your extruder screen mesh, there are three major considerations: Pressure requirements, the features of the material being filtered, and the desired level of decontaminants.
Most extruder screens found in the plastics industry are typically a square mesh weave ranging from 20-150 mesh and are made out of stainless steel to avoid corrosion/contact corrosion.
Manufacturing Process of Extruder Screens
Extruder screens are manufactured to lots of different specifications.
Here is how an extruder screen is manufactured:
1. Wire mesh specifications with appropriate micron ratings are chosen;
2. Materials are punched by using a sheet punching machine and compound tooling, thus forming specially shaped and sized mesh pieces;
3. The resultant mesh pieces are layered and joined together by using the spot welding operation;
4. The resultant extruder screens are cleaned;
5. Clean extruder screens are shrink-wrapped in preparation for shipping.
Technical Data Sheet of Extruder Screens
Technical Data | Remark | |
Material | Stainless steel 201, 304 , 316 and so many more
Weave Type | Plain weave, twill weave and dutch weave | Dutch weave is suitable for finer filtration. |
Wire diameter | Customizable | The combination of wire diameter and mesh opening size must be technically feasible! |
Mesh opening size (Micron rating) | Customizable
Mesh Count | 18, 20, 30, 40, 50,60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 165, 200, 250, 270, 300, 350, 400 and 500 | Square mesh counts and associated micron ratings range from 18 mesh (1000 micron) to 500 mesh (25 micron). |
Overall size | Customizable --Round screens: 10mm to 600mm; --Kidney-shaped screens: 60mmx80mm to 90mmx170mm | Subject to the customer's drawing or detailed written requirements. |
Shape | Round, kidney-shaped, rectangle or oval, etc. | Subject to the customer's drawing or detailed written requirements. |
Configuration type | Single-layer or multi-layer | Except for the single-layer configuration, extruder screens typically contain 2 to 5 layers of wire mesh. |
Welding type | Spot welding | Extruder screens are properly spot welded to ensure they do not bend, stretch or break. |
Due to the high temperature of the plastic melt, extruder screens are really the only solution that is both cheap and durable enough to make practical sense in a typical plastic extrusion process.
