High-precision infrared thermometers use bicolor ratio technology to measure the temperature of a target. The bicolor ratio technique gets rid of the dependence on absolute energy measurements and allows for effective measurements under the following conditions:
- The target is partially obscured.
- The target being measured is smaller than the pyrometer's measurement field of view.
Another advantage of bicolor thermometry is that the measurement results are close to the highest temperature in the measurement field of view, rather than the average temperature. Even if the target no longer fills the measurement field of view, the bicolor pyrometer can be installed farther away, thus avoiding situations where the target size and distance factor force the pyrometer to be installed at a specific distance.
