Product Description
The Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) machine represents the pinnacle of advanced mechanical processing technology. This outstanding piece of equipment is specifically designed for highly intricate electrical discharge machining tasks, making it indispensable for the creation of precise metal molds and sophisticated mechanical components. EDM stands out as a unique processing technique, where the electric corrosion generated by pulsed discharges between electrodes immersed in a specialized working fluid meticulously erodes conductive materials. This impeccable process, alternatively known as discharge machining or electrical corrosion machining, is widely recognized by its famous English acronym, EDM.

Principle of Spark Machine:
In the advanced realm of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), the tool electrode and the workpiece are ingeniously connected to the opposite poles of a pulse power supply. Immersed in a working fluid or with fluid draped into the discharge gap, when the gap between these electrodes reaches a precise distance, the applied pulse voltage surpasses the working fluid's resistance, igniting a spark discharge.
During the fleeting moment of discharge, an immense amount of heat energy concentrates within the micro-channel, rocketing to temperatures exceeding 10,000 degrees Celsius and causing sharp pressure variations. This intense energy results in localized melting, vaporization, and ejection of metal material into the working fluid. The expelled material rapidly condenses into solid metal particles, which are carried away by the working liquid, leaving a microscopic pitting mark on the workpiece surface. The process pauses momentarily as the working fluid restores its insulating properties between the electrodes.
Subsequently, the next pulse voltage initiates a discharge at another nearby point between the electrodes, repetitively generating spark discharges. Each pulse erodes an extremely small amount of metal, but given the high frequency-thousands of pulses per second-significant cumulative metal removal is achieved, ensuring optimal productivity and precision.
Maintaining a precise discharge gap between the tool electrode and workpiece, the erosion of workpiece metal continues as the tool electrode advances towards it. Ultimately, the machined shape mirrors that of the tool electrode. By adjusting the tool electrode's shape and its relative movement to the workpiece, complex profiles are accurately crafted. Tool electrodes are usually made of materials with high electrical conductivity, high melting points, and ease of processing, such as copper, graphite, copper-tungsten alloy, and molybdenum. Although the tool electrode experiences minimal wear compared to the workpiece metal corrosion, it often results in negligible loss.
Serving as the discharge medium, the working liquid plays a pivotal role in cooling and chip removal during the machining process. Preferred working liquids include low-viscosity, high flash point, and stable performance mediums such as kerosene, deionized water, and emulsion. EDM machines operate on self-excited discharge principles: the spark discharge between the electrodes begins with a high voltage, breaking down the medium as the electrodes near each other, initiating a spark. The discharge results in a sharp drop in resistance and voltage. The spark channel must extinguish quickly (within 10-7 to 10-3 seconds) to preserve the 'cold pole' characteristic, ensuring that the channel energy affects only a minuscule area, thereby causing localized erosion of the electrode. This precision technique of material removal is termed EDM.
