| Description | Sulfadimidine acts usually bactericidal against many Gram-positive and Gram-negative micro-organisms, like Corynebacterium, E. coli, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Pasteurella, Salmonella and Streptococcus spp. Sulfadimidine affect bacterial purine synthesis, as a result of which a blockade is accomplished. |
| Indication | Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides. Administration to animals with a serious impaired renal and/or liver function or with blood dyscrasias. |
| Dosage and Administration | For subcutaneous and intramuscular administration. General: 3 - 6 ml. per 10 kg. body weight the first day, followed by 3 ml. per 10 kg. body weight on the following 2 - 5 days. |
| Side Effects | (1)Sulfanilamide and its metabolin can precipitate in the urine. Long-term application easily make crystallization which cause crystalluria, hematuresis and blocking of kidney tubules. (2)Untoward effect of SD on dogs includes: keratoconjunctivitissicca, vomit, inappetence diarrhea, fever, urticaria and multiple arthritis. Long-term treatmentmay also cause hypothyroidism. (3)On cats, it mainly shows: inappetence, leukopenia and anemia. (4)Horse: intravenous injection can cause temporary paralysis, oral may cause diarrhea. (5)Sulfonamides injection is alkali solution, intramuscular injection, cause strong stimulation to organization. |
| Precaution | (1) This products would separate out crystal when mixed with acid so do not use 5% Glucose Liquid to dilute it. (2) Long term or massive application would cause crystalluria so sodium bicarbonate and large amount of water should be applied at the same time. (3) If any anaphylaxis or other serious untoward effect appear, stop dosage and cure immediately. |
