The basic principle is similar to the coolness you feel when walking out of a swimming pool on a hot summer day. A cooler lowers the temperature of the air by evaporating water. When hot air passes through the cooling medium in the cooler, the liquid water in the wet curtain becomes steam water. This evaporation takes away heat from the air, lowers the temperature of the blown air, and thus produces a cooling effect.
