Hydraulic hoses can be connected using two primary methods: crimped fittings and field attachable fittings.
1. Field Attachable Fittings (Reusable Fittings)
Design: Consist of a socket and nipple.
Installation: Can be assembled without the need for crimping equipment, making them suitable for on-site or emergency repairs.
Applications: Ideal for low to medium-pressure hydraulic systems.
Advantages:
Easy to assemble and disassemble.
Can be reused, reducing waste and cost.
Convenient for field repairs.
Disadvantages:
Less secure and reliable compared to crimped fittings.
Not recommended for high-pressure applications.
2. Crimped Fittings (Permanent Fittings)
Design: Permanently sealed to the hose using a crimping machine.
Installation: Requires a crimping machine, which comes in two main types:
Workshop Crimpers: Large, stationary machines for high-volume use in fixed locations.
Portable Crimpers: Compact and lightweight, designed for on-site use and highly popular for fieldwork.
High sealing performance and long-term reliability.
Most widely used option in the fluid power industry.
Suitable for demanding environments and high-pressure systems.
Disadvantages:
Requires specialized equipment for installation.
Not reusable, increasing material costs.
Warning:
Hydraulic systems can work at high pressures, and fittings and adaptors can be subjected to extreme loadings such as vibration and uncontrolled pressure peaks. When choosing fittings or adaptors careful attention should be given to the technical specifications.
Hydraulic Fittings must be used with the properly specified hose. Using field-attachable hose fittings with hose other than those they are intended may result in hose failure and possible serious injury.
