- Cooling and solidification: Once the molten aluminum fills the die cavity, it starts to cool and solidify. The cooling time depends on the part's size, thickness, and complexity. During this stage, the aluminum takes the shape of the cavity, forming the desired part.
- Ejection: After the aluminum has solidified, the die halves are separated, and the casting is ejected from the mold using ejector pins. The ejector die half typically contains these pins that push the solidified part out of the mold.
- Trimming and finishing: Excess material, such as flash, runners, and gate, must be removed from the cast part. This is usually done using a trimming press or manual cutting tools. Additional finishing processes, such as polishing, deburring, or surface treatment (e.g., anodizing, painting, or powder coating), may be required to achieve the desired final appearance and properties.
- Quality control and inspection: The cast parts are inspected for defects, such as porosity, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish. Non-destructive testing methods, such as x-ray, ultrasonic testing, or dye penetrant inspection, may be used to ensure part quality.
- Post-processing: If necessary, secondary operations like machining, assembly, or heat treatment can be performed to achieve the required specifications and tolerances.
