The pure l-menthol was obtained by recrystallizing the crystallized
peppermint oil after freezing and centrifugation with low boiling
solvent. The mother liquor after crystallization still contains 40%~50%
menthol and a large amount of menthol, which is converted into a mixture
of L-menthol and d-neomenthol by hydrogenation. More l-menthol can be
obtained by saponifying part of the ester, crystallizing, distilling or
making its borate ester, and then separating other parts of peppermint
