When inhaling, the gas passes through the HME filter, and the heat and moisture are brought back into the airway. The HME filter is suitable for patients with non-COPD and low secretions in the respiratory tract. For patients with more COPD sputum and long-term mechanical ventilation, the HME filter cannot be used alone, otherwise, it will cause insufficient airway humidification and block the artificial airway. In addition, HME filters have water absorption and hydrophobic points. When using water-absorbent HME filters, you should closely observe the changes in airway resistance. When using a hydrophobic HME filter, if condensed water accumulates inside, the water should be poured out gently instead of being thrown out, so as not to allow water to enter the HME filter and increase airway resistance.
