The cutting teeth of hard - rock well tricone bits are key components for effective drilling in hard - rock formations.
The cutting teeth of hard - rock tricone bits often use tungsten carbide - based cemented carbide materials. This material has extremely high hardness, with its hardness value usually ranging from HRA85 - 92 on the Rockwell hardness scale, second only to diamond. High hardness enables it to resist the wear of cutting teeth by hard rock and maintain the integrity of the tooth shape during the drilling process.
At the same time, cemented carbide also has good compressive strength and can withstand the huge axial pressure during drilling without plastic deformation. Its compressive strength can reach several GPa. For example, the compressive strength of some high - quality cemented carbide cutting teeth can reach 4 - 5GPa.
Coating Enhancement
To further improve the performance of the cutting teeth, some cutting teeth surfaces are coated with a special coating. Common coating materials include titanium nitride (TiN), titanium carbide (TiC), etc.
The thickness of these coatings is usually between a few micrometers and several tens of micrometers. For example, the thickness of the TiN coating is generally 2 - 5μm. The coating can improve the wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and lubricity of the cutting teeth. When the coated cutting teeth are used in hard - rock drilling, they can reduce the friction coefficient with the rock, decrease the wear rate of the cutting teeth, and improve the drilling efficiency of the bit.
