The air filter protects the generator's motor from small airborne debris that can clog the combustion system or the internal fuel/air supply system and cause it to stop working.
If we are talking about the advantages of the air filter in the generator itself. We don't want debris splashing into the functional parts of the generator that can build up over time and cause functional failures in the future. The air filter prevents the accumulation of particles that could cause functional problems in the machine.
