Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP) is a non-ionic polymer compound belonging to the N-vinylamide polymer class with unique properties and application range. The chemical formula of PVP is (C6H9NO)n and the molecular weight ranges from thousands to millions. The K value is often used to characterize its average molecular weight.
Basic properties
PVP is usually a white to light yellow amorphous powder with a slight odor. It is very soluble in water and a variety of organic solvents, such as halogenated hydrocarbon solvents, alcohols, amines, nitroalkanes and low molecular weight fatty acids, but insoluble in a few solvents such as acetone, ether, turpentine, aliphatic hydrocarbons and alicyclic hydrocarbons1. At room temperature and pressure, PVP has excellent chemical stability, is non-toxic to humans and animals, and has good physiological compatibility.
Types and specifications
PVP has developed into three categories: non-ionic, cationic, and anionic, and includes three specifications of products: industrial grade, pharmaceutical grade, and food grade. PVP of different specifications and types has different performance and application.
Synthesis method
The synthesis of PVP is mainly carried out by solution polymerization, where NVP monomer is placed in an organic solvent or aqueous solution and polymerized by adding an initiator. Different polymerization methods will affect the structure and properties of the polymer.
Application fields
Pharmaceutical field: PVP is widely used as a pharmaceutical excipient to make tablets, granules, injections, etc. It can also be used as a detoxifying agent, delay agent, lubricant and coating film-forming agent for eye drops.
Food field: As a food additive and stabilizer, it is used to improve the quality and taste of food.
Cosmetic field: Using its film-forming and moisturizing properties, it is used as an additive and stabilizer for cosmetics.
Water treatment field: As a flocculant and adsorbent, it is used in water treatment and purification processes.
Other fields: It can be used as a surface coating agent, dispersant, thickener, and adhesive in daily cosmetics, pigments, printing inks, textiles, printing and dyeing, and color picture tubes.
