Why flare is needed in biogas plant
As a set of safety protection device in the biogas utilization project, the biogas flare is mainly used to burn the excessive biogas safely in the case of biogas system maintenance/failure shutdown, serious fluctuation of biogas volume causing the storage volume of the gas holder to reach the upper limit, so as to ensure the safety and continuous operation of the whole system.
It can also be used as an effective measure for the safe destruction of excess biogas during system commissioning.
Type of flare
According to the set position of the combustion flame, the biogas flare can be divided into open type (external combustion type) and enclosed type (internal combustion type); it can be divided into ground flare and elevated flare according to different erection methods.


The selection of flare type shall be determined based on comprehensive consideration of factors such as biogas volume, biogas pressure, requirements for thermal radiation generated around, safety distance, etc.
The elevated flare is suitable for the treatment of biogas with high atmospheric capacity and pressure, but it has high noise, high thermal radiation intensity, flame light pollution and poor maintenance convenience.
The ground closed flare is suitable for biogas with small gas volume and low pressure. The combustion process is completely closed, there is no flame outside, there is no light pollution, the thermal radiation is small, the burnout rate is high, the internal combustion temperature is not lower than 600 ºC, and the external surface temperature is not higher than the ambient temperature of 60 ºC.
The ground non-enclosed flare is suitable for biogas with small gas volume and low pressure. The combustion process is not completely closed, the flame leaks, the thermal radiation is large, the light pollution occurs, and the burnout rate is lower than that of the closed type.
Composition of the flare
The flare is mainly composed of burner, flare tower, control valve, flame arrester and automatic ignition device. It is equipped with online flame and pressure detection and adopts full-automatic control.
