1.Perchloroethylene, also known as perchloroethylene, is an organic chemical that is widely used in dry cleaning and metal degreasing, and is also used in the manufacture of other chemicals and consumer products.

Many people can smell it when the air contains parts per million of tetrachloroethylene. 3 In 1821, Michael Faraday heated hexachloroethane for the first time to decompose it into tetrachloroethylene and chlorine gas.

PCE is an excellent solvent for organic materials. Otherwise it is volatile, highly stable, and nonflammable. For these reasons, it is widely used in dry cleaning. It is also used to degrease metal parts in the automotive and other metalworking industries, usually as a mixture with other chlorocarbons. Tetrachloroethylene is being substituted in Europe for similar but more hazardous trichloroethylene. It appears in a few consumer products including paint strippers and spot removers. It is also used in aerosol preparations.
It is used in neutrino detectors where a neutrino interacts with a neutron in the chlorine atom and converts it to a proton to form argon.
Historical applications
PCE was once extensively used as an intermediate in the manufacture of HFC-134a and related refrigerants. In the early 20th century, tetrachloroethene was used for the treatment of hookworm infestation.
PCE storage methods include the following :
Storage environment : Tetrachloroethylene should be stored in a cool, ventilated warehouse, away from fire and heat. The temperature of the storeroom should be kept low to prevent decomposition due to high temperatures .Packaging requirements : Tetrachloroethylene packaging should be sealed to avoid contact with air. Packaging materials should choose airtight materials to prevent volatilization and deterioration.
Store separately : Tetrachloroethylene should be stored separately from oxidants, alkalis, active metal powders, alkali metals and edible chemicals, and should not be mixed to prevent chemical reactions or contamination .
Preventive measures : When handling tetrachloroethylene, engineering control measures such as airtight operation, ventilation, etc., should be taken. Operators should wear protective equipment, such as self-breathing filter gas masks, chemical safety glasses, breathable gas suits, and chemical protection gloves .
Emergency treatment : The storage area should be equipped with corresponding firefighting equipment and leak emergency treatment equipment, so that it can respond in time in the event of a leak or fire.
