Are anhydrous hydrogen fluoride and hydrofluoric acid the same substance?
Strictly speaking, hydrofluoric acid (HF) and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF) are different forms of the same substance. They share the same chemical composition, with the chemical formula HF, but due to the presence or absence of water, their physical states, usage, and properties differ. Specifically:
• Hydrofluoric acid is a solution of hydrogen fluoride dissolved in water, typically in liquid form.
• Anhydrous hydrogen fluoride is pure hydrogen fluoride without any water content, which exists as a gas at room temperature and as a liquid below 19.5°C.
Therefore, while both are essentially HF, the presence or absence of water leads to differences in their applications, chemical properties, and handling requirements. In this sense, they can be considered different forms of the same chemical compound.
