Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is soluble in water and halogenated hydrocarbon solvents, alcohols, amines, nitroalkanes and low molecular fatty acids, but insoluble in ether, turpentine, aliphatic hydrocarbons and fatty acid (C8-C10).

Personal care products (cosmetics)
Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is an important material in hair care, skin care, oral care products. PVP 30 is widely used for hair styling. It is used in cosmetics as followings :
Film-formers, thickeners, lubricants, and binders in hair-setting lotions.
Detoxifiers and detergents in shampoos and toothpastes.
Dispersants in hair colors.

Pharmaceutical
PVP is a binder for tablets and granules, a co-solvent forinjections, and a glidant for capsules. Common types are PVP K25,K30.
It also has one use for detoxifiers and prolongedeffects for eye drops , Lubricant and coating film-forming agent,dispersant for liquid preparations and stabilizer for enzymes andheat sensitive drugs and can also be used as cryopreservationagent.
In contact lenses , Polyvinylpyrrolidone can increase their hydrophilicity andlubricity. Common types are PVP K12,K15, K17.
PVP K90 is widely as an excipient for pharmaceutical preparations , as a binder forpreparations,Co-precipitating agent, co-solventor crystal formation inhibitor in injections, Coating orfilm-forming agent, Controlled release of retarder and sustained-release drug can prolong the action time of the drug.
Polyvinylpyrrolidone is also a material in artificial vitreous and cornea; Surgical bandage; iodine disinfectant.
