IC Anaerobic Reactor
The IC (internal circulation) anaerobic reactor is a new generation of highly efficient anaerobic reactors, namely the internal circulation anaerobic reactor, which is similar to a 2-layer UASB reactor connected in series. It consists of two reaction chambers, upper and lower. Wastewater flows from bottom to top in the reactor, and pollutants are adsorbed and degraded by bacteria. Purified water flows out from the upper part of the reactor.
The EGSB anaerobic reactor is composed of two layers of UASB reactors connected in series. According to functional division, the reactor is divided into 5 zones from bottom to top: mixing zone, 1st anaerobic zone, 2nd anaerobic zone, sedimentation zone, and gas-liquid separation zone.

Technical advantage
(1) High volumetric load: The sludge concentration and microbial biomass in the IC reactor are high, and there is internal circulation, resulting in good mass transfer efficiency. The organic load of the influent can exceed that of a regular anaerobic reactor by more than three times.
(2) Save investment and land area: The volume loading rate of the IC reactor is about three times higher than that of a regular UASB reactor, and its volume is equivalent to about 1/4 to 1/3 of that of a regular reactor, greatly reducing the infrastructure investment of the reactor; Moreover, the height to diameter ratio of IC reactors is very large (usually 4-8), so the footprint is small.
(3) Strong shock load resistance: When treating low concentration wastewater (COD=2000-3000mg/L), the circulating flow rate in the reactor can reach 2-3 times the inlet water volume; When treating high concentration wastewater (COD=10000-1500mg/L), the internal circulation flow rate can reach 10-20 times the inflow rate. A large amount of circulating water is thoroughly mixed with the influent, which dilutes the harmful substances in the raw water and greatly reduces the impact of toxins on the anaerobic digestion process.
(4) Strong resistance to low temperature: The impact of temperature on anaerobic digestion is mainly on the digestion rate. Due to the presence of a large number of microorganisms, the impact of temperature on anaerobic digestion in IC reactors has become less significant and severe. Usually, anaerobic digestion in IC reactors can be carried out at room temperature (20-25 ºC), which reduces the difficulty of digestion and insulation, and saves energy.
(5) Ability to buffer pH value: The internal circulation flow rate is equivalent to the effluent reflux of the first anaerobic zone, which can use the alkalinity converted by COD to buffer the pH value, maintain the optimal pH value in the reactor, and also reduce the amount of alkali added to the influent.
(6) Internal automatic circulation without additional power: The reflux of ordinary anaerobic reactors is achieved through external pressurization, while the IC reactor uses the biogas generated by itself as the lifting power to achieve internal circulation of the mixed liquid, without the need for a pump for forced circulation, saving power consumption.
(7) Good effluent stability: The use of two-stage UASB cascade anaerobic treatment can compensate for the adverse effects of high K s during the anaerobic process. Van Lier [6] demonstrated in 1994 that reactor grading can reduce the concentration of VFA in the effluent, prolong the biological residence time, and stabilize the reaction.
(8) Short start-up cycle: The sludge in the IC reactor has high activity and fast biological proliferation, providing favorable conditions for rapid start-up of the reactor. The start-up cycle of IC reactors is generally 1-2 months, while the start-up cycle of ordinary UASB is as long as 4-6 months [7].
(9) High utilization value of biogas: The biogas produced by the reactor has high purity, with CH4 ranging from 70% to 80%, CO2 ranging from 20% to 30%, and other organic compounds ranging from 1% to 5%. It can be used as fuel for further utilization
