CORROSION RESISTANCE
- Thanks to its elevated levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
- Its composition provides high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic environments.
- Resilient against chloride stress corrosion cracking and can withstand temperatures up to about 302°F (150°C).
- The ferrite content ensures top-notch performance of Duplex 2205 in caustic conditions.
HEAT RESISTANCE
- Like other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
- Susceptible to embrittlement at temperatures above 572°F (300°C), even for brief periods. Thus, usage above this temperature is not recommended.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
- Exhibits good weldability.
- Generally, avoid welding without filler metal to prevent excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
- Annealing temperature range: 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
- Cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but it does work-harden.
- Special care is required to account for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion to prevent warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece is not compact, the edges may cool significantly faster, risking cracks in the cooler regions.

Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent formability across a wide range of fabrications, making it a versatile choice for various applications. However, its high strength can present challenges during processing. Even with powerful equipment, it's essential to account for increased spring-back due to the grade's robust nature, ensuring precision and accuracy in every project.
MACHINABILITY
Machining Duplex stainless steel bar 2205 requires more effort compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steel due to the higher cutting forces involved, which leads to quicker tool wear. To achieve optimal results, follow these guidelines: A) Utilize a powerful, rigid machine with a robust tool and workpiece mount; B) Minimize tool extensions to reduce vibration; C) Ensure the tool nose radius is no longer than necessary to maintain a sharp carbide edge while providing sufficient strength; D) Design the machining sequence so that each cut depth penetrates below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation.
