EGSB Anaerobic Reactor
The expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) is a third-generation anaerobic bioreactor developed on the basis of UASB reactor. Its main characteristics are the design of a large aspect ratio, increased liquid surface upward flow rate, and the generation of biogas agitation. The high liquid upward flow rate eliminates dead zones and achieves better mud water mixing effect. The granular sludge bed is completely mixed, fully expanded, and enhances the contact between sewage and microorganisms. It is suitable for the treatment of various organic wastewater and can achieve a higher load rate, producing more gas.
The EGSB anaerobic reactor is mainly composed of the inlet system, reaction zone, three-phase separator, and sedimentation zone. The function of the three-phase separator is to first degas the mixed liquid, and the generated biogas enters the gas chamber and is discharged from the reactor. The degassed mixed liquid is further separated from the same liquid in the sedimentation zone, and the sludge settles before returning to the reaction zone. The clarified effluent flows out of the reactor.

Technical advantage
(1) BOD removal rate is high, about 90% to 95%, stable operation, and simple structure.
(2) The height to diameter ratio (generally 2-4), liquid rising flow rate (4-10m · h-1), and COD organic load (40 kg/(m3 · d)) are higher, occupying a small area and easy to manage.
(2) Granular sludge is easier to form, evenly distributed, and has a large biomass in the sludge bed (up to 60g/l), making it suitable for treating medium to high concentration organic wastewater.
(3) The sludge in the reactor is in an expanded fluidized state, and the sludge is granular with high activity. Good precipitation performance.
(4) Easy to operate, using a rotary mixing water distribution method, the water distribution is uniform, the mass transfer effect is good, and there is no problem of blockage and short flow rate.
(5) An external reflux system has been added to supplement alkalinity through reflux water, reducing operating costs.
(6) The formation of internal circulation causes the actual water volume in the sludge expansion bed area of the reactor to be much greater than the inflow. The circulating return water dilutes the inflow, greatly improving the reactor's ability to withstand impact loads and buffer pH changes.
