Product Description
Formic acid (chemical formula HCOOH, molecular formula CH2O2, molecular weight 46.03), commonly known as formic acid, is the simplest carboxylic acid. Colorless and pungent liquid. Formic acid is a weak electrolyte with a melting point of 8.6ºC and a boiling point of 100.8ºC. Very acidic, corrosive, and can stimulate skin foaming. It is found in the secretions of bees, some ants and caterpillars. It is an organic chemical raw material and also used as a disinfectant and preservative.

1855~1856Formic acid was first prepared by decomposition of oxalic acid by J.-L. Guy-Lussac. From 1855 to 1856, M. Berthelot directly prepared sodium formate from sodium hydroxide and carbon monoxide, and T. Goldschmidt first prepared formic acid from sodium formate by hydrolysis. This method began to be used in industrial production in Europe in 1896, and it is still used in small batch production. In 1980, American Scientific Design Company, Bethlehem Iron and Steel Company and Leonard Company successfully developed the method of methanol carbonylation to produce formic acid, and a factory with an annual output of 20kt of formic acid was put into operation. In addition, formic acid can also be recovered from the by-product of acetic acid production by oxidation of light oil.

Formic acid is one of the basic organic chemical raw materials, which is widely used in pesticide, leather, dye, medicine and rubber industries. Formic acid can be directly used in fabric processing, tanning, textile printing and dyeing and storage of green feed, and can also be used as metal surface treatment agent, rubber additive and industrial solvent. In organic synthesis, it is used to synthesize various formates, acridine dyes and formamide series pharmaceutical intermediates.
