Therapeutic indications
ATORVASTATIN is indicated as an adjunct to diet to reduce elevated total cholesterol (total-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglycerides (TG)levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolaemia or mixed dyslipidaemia where the primary abnormality is either elevated cholesterol or triglycerides when response to diet and other non-pharmacological measures is inadequate
indicated to reduce total-C and LDL-C in patients with heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterola
indicated to increase plasma high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and decrease the LDL-C/HDL-C and total-C/HDL-C ratios
indicated as an adjunct to diet for the treatment of patients with elevated serum triglyceride levels (hypertriglyceridaemia), and for the treatment of patients with dysbetalipoproteinaemia who do not respond adequately to diet
indicated for the reduction of cardiac is chaemic events in patients with asymptomatic or mildly to moderately symptomatic coronary artery disease with a LDL-C of at least 3.0mmol/L and a triglyceride level of no more than 5.6mmol/L.
Dose and method of administration
Adults
In a compassionate use study of patients with homozygous FH, most patients responded to
80 mg atorvastatin with a greater than 15% reduction in LDL-C (18%-45%).
Children
Treatment experience in a paediatric population is limited to doses of atorvastatin up to
80 mg/day for 1 year in patients with homozygous FH
Hypertriglyceridaemia and Dysbetalipoproteinaemia
The dosage of ATORVASTATIN in this patient group is 10 mg-80 mg daily as a
single dose. Doses should be individualised and adjusted according to the patient's response
after 4 weeks........
