Grade 2 Titanium Rod
Superior Corrosion Resistance
Titanium should not be used with strong reducing acids, fluoride solutions, pure oxygen, or anhydrous ***.
General Corrosion Resistance
The general corrosion rates for Grade 2 titanium across various media are detailed in Table 1. CP titanium shows excellent resistance to corrosion in numerous environments, including:
- Seawater and Brines
- Inorganic Salts
- Moist *** Gas
- Alkaline Solutions
- Oxidizing Acids
- Organics and Organic Acids
- Sulfur Compounds
Crevice Corrosion Resistance
CP titanium demonstrates superior resistance to crevice corrosion in salt solutions compared to stainless steels. It does not exhibit crevice corrosion at temperatures below 80°C (176°F), irrespective of pH, even in highly chlorinated conditions.
Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance
Grade 2 titanium showcases exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in hot chloride solutions and remains impervious to SCC in seawater.
Erosion Corrosion
Titanium exhibits outstanding resistance to erosion in flowing environments,
including seawater with velocities up to 130 ft/sec (40 m/sec), showing negligible impact on the material. Even the presence of abrasive particles like sand has a minimal effect on its corrosion resistance.
Hydrogen Embrittlement
Titanium does not significantly absorb hydrogen when exposed to seawater, even at elevated temperatures. Hydrogen uptake occurs only if these three conditions are met:
- 1. The pH is < 3 or > 12,
- 2. The temperature exceeds 176°F (80°C),
- 3. There is a mechanism for hydrogen generation, such as a galvanic couple or impressed current.
Bio-Corrosion
Titanium alloys exhibit remarkable immunity to microbiologically influenced corrosion. However, biofouling may occur in seawater due to titanium's non-toxicity towards marine organisms. This can be mitigated through chlorination or by increasing water velocity in heat exchangers.
Corrosion Fatigue
Unlike many other materials, titanium does not suffer from decreased fatigue performance in seawater. Its fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates remain consistent whether tested in air or seawater.
Galvanic Corrosion
In the galvanic series, titanium is near the noble end, close to stainless steels, and typically acts as the cathode when paired with other metals. It does not suffer from galvanic corrosion itself but can accelerate corrosion in other metals. When coupled with noble metals like graphite, titanium's passivity is further enhanced.
Fatigue Properties
Grade 2 Titanium Rod maintains its fatigue properties even in seawater, with consistent fatigue endurance limits and fatigue *** growth rates whether tested in air or seawater.
Weldability
CP2 Grade Titanium Rod offers excellent weldability, provided that necessary precautions are taken. Given titanium's reactivity, an inert gas shield must cover both the OD and ID of the rod, and the material must be free from grease or oil contamination.
Typically, Grade 2 Titanium Rod is welded using manual or automatic TIG welding, with or without filler wire. Low heat input is recommended to minimize the heat-affected zone. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required.
