1. Backfire: The flame goes back into the torch tip. You hear a pop sound. This is usually NOT a safety concern. When we are testing a torch after it has been repaired, we will cause it to back fire. The backfire only happens in the tip.

2. Sustained Backfire: The flame goes past the torch tip and into the torch itself. You will hear a hissing or squealing sound and/or a pointed flame.

3. Flashback: The flame is going past the mixer on the torch and/or into the hoses. If the flame reaches the hoses it will explode and rupture or separate the hoses. If there is nothing to stop the flashback before entering the cylinder, it could lead to an explosion.

How do you prevent a flash back?

The instigators of the flashback are the mixture of oxygen and fuel gases burning in the same tube. You can prevent this mixing by making sure the gas hoses are purged before and after every use. A second contributor to a flashback can be the flashback arrestor. In situations where high volumes of gas are needed, (e.g. heating steel) the arrestor (by design) will restrict the volume. This can cause the gases to creep back into the torch and possibly create a flashback. In these cases, it is better to put high volume arrestors on the regulator.

What's the difference between a check valve and flash back arrestor?

A check valve can only prevent the reverse gas flow. However, a Flash Back Arrestor prevents reverse gas flow AND arrests the flashback. A check valve cannot arrest a flash back. This could allow the flame to get past the torch and into the hoses.
 

What gases require flashback arrestors?

Oxy-Fuel Systems:
There is potential for flashback to occur with any oxy-fuel system, whether you use oxy-acetylene or oxy-LPG (oxy-propane). The flashback can occur on either the oxy or the fuel gas line, which is why FBAs should be fitted to each gas line.

LPG / Propane only systems (without oxygen):
The risk of a flashback when using LPG/propane-only torches & equipment is extremely low, and using FBAs is not currently required in / by any Australian-standard.  However, some work sites may still require FBAs to be fitted to all gas/flame equipment, regardless of whether or not oxygen is being used.

Q1. Can this be used in a fish tank?
-- Yes, it can be used in a fish tank technically. Just please be ware, this is a 0.5 micron stone, it only produces very tiny bubbles.

Q2.Is this air stone (diffuser) made of ozone resistant materials like glass, stainless-steel, or ceramic?
-- The item description says 316 stainless steel. 316 stainless is somewhat compatible with low concentration ozone.

Q3. How to install it into cornelius keg?
-- The barb on the stone can attach the end of hose. And the another end of hose can install into your dip tube on keg lid.

Q4. What's any noticeable difference between 0.5 and 2 micron stone?
-- Compared with 2 micron stone, 0.5 micron diffusion stone will greatly increase the surface area of gas and liquid contact , making the gas easier and faster to combine with liquid. It will improve your beer & drink mouth-feel.

Q5.Can this be used with a portable aerator like the marine metal bubble box?
-- I use mine with an aquarium aerator. The big question is always hose and barb size. If those match or you can step up or down

Q6.Can this stone be cleaned with a perchlorate (like PBW) cleanser?
-- This is not a stone, though it acts like one. It is made out of 316 Stainless Steel. It can be washed in PBW then sanitized in Star San. Do not touch the aerated head with bare fingers.
