Iridium, a remarkable element with the symbol Ir and atomic number 77, stands out with its silvery-white appearance. Known for its incredible hardness and brittleness, it undergoes a transformation during hot processing—becoming ductile and workable into fine filaments and sheets, as long as it remains unannealed. Post-annealing, it regains its rigid and brittle nature. With a density of approximately 22.56 grams per cubic centimeter, a melting point around 2410±40°C, and a boiling point reaching 4130°C, iridium forms a face-centered cubic crystal structure.
Applications of Iridium: Iridium's versatility finds it used in pen tips, needles, balance blades, compass holders, and electrical contacts. It plays a crucial role in the fabrication of porous spinnerets and serves as an alloy additive. Moreover, it's integral to laser components, spark plug materials, and other high-temperature resistant raw materials.
