Product Description

 

Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) is a key device used to reduce harmful emissions from automobile exhaust. It converts carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O) and nitrogen (N2) through catalytic reactions, and plays the role of vehicle exhaust purification.
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
Step 1 Define
Diesel particulate filter is the core component of diesel vehicle exhaust system, which is specially used to capture particulate matter (PM) produced by diesel combustion, especially soot and ash.
2. How it works
Passive filtration: When the exhaust gas passes through the DPF, the particles are physically trapped in the ceramic or metal honeycomb structure.
 Active regeneration: When particulate matter accumulates to a certain amount, it is burned into carbon dioxide by increasing the exhaust temperature (such as injection fuel or urea) to achieve filter element regeneration.

Structure of three-way catalytic converter
1. Shell:
 Material: usually made of stainless steel, with good high temperature and corrosion resistance.
 2. Substrate: 
Materials: Common substrate materials include honeycomb ceramics (such as cordierite, silicon carbide) and metal materials (such as stainless steel). 
3.Catalyst Coating: 
Material: The catalyst is usually composed of precious metals (such as platinum Pt, palladium Pd, Rhodium Rh) that are precisely sprayed onto the support. 
4. Thermal Insulation Layer: 
Material: The thermal insulation layer is usually made of high temperature ceramic fiber or thermal insulation felt. 
5. Sealing Gasket: 
Material: Sealing gasket is usually made of high temperature and heat resistant material, such as graphite, ceramic fiber, etc. 
6. Support Structure: 
Material: Support structures are usually made of metal brackets or ceramic materials.
 
 
Diesel particulate filter (DPF) structure 
1. Shell:
 Material: usually made of stainless steel, with good high temperature and corrosion resistance. 
Function: Protect internal components from external mechanical damage and environmental impacts.
 2. Honeycomb ceramic carrier:
 Material: Common carrier materials include Cordierite, Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Titanate.
 Structure: The carrier is designed as a honeycomb structure, the channel is open at one end and blocked at the other end, forming a checkerboard surface design. 
Function: When the exhaust gas passes through the porous wall, the particles are trapped on the wall surface, so as to achieve filtration.
 3. Catalytic coating: 
Material: usually contains precious metals (such as platinum Pt, palladium Pd, rhodium Rh) and some auxiliary materials (such as aluminum oxide, cerium dioxide).
 Function: The catalytic coating can reduce the ignition temperature of particles, promote the oxidation combustion of particles, and improve the regeneration efficiency. 
4. Blocking end: 
Function: one end of the entrance channel is open, and the other end is blocked, forcing the exhaust gas through the porous wall to achieve the filtration of particles
 

Installation Instructions

 

The installation position of the three-way catalytic converter for gasoline vehicles
 Core position: 
the three-way catalytic converter is usually installed in the front section of the exhaust system, that is, between the engine and the muffler, immediately after the oxygen sensor (front oxygen sensor). 
Typical model installation example: Volkswagen EA888 engine: The catalytic converter is located in the engine compartment, near the turbocharger outlet. BMW B58 straight-six engine: The catalyst is integrated behind the exhaust manifold. 
Specially designed 
Turbocharged models: 
The catalytic converter may be integrated between the turbocharger and the exhaust manifold (such as the Porsche Taycan). 
Hybrid models:
 In order to accommodate frequent start-stop, the catalytic converter needs to be close to the engine to heat up rapidly (such as the Toyota THS II system).
 
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) installation position 
1. Diesel vehicle installation position DPF is usually installed in the rear of the exhaust system, behind the turbocharger or under the chassis. 
Spatial layout: The DPF of heavy diesel vehicles (such as trucks) is often integrated in the chassis exhaust road, while light vehicles (such as passenger cars) may be arranged near the engine compartment. 
2. Integrated design Installation
 DPF+SCR integration: Some models combine DPF and SCR catalytic converters into one module (such as Ford EcoBlue diesel engine) to reduce pipeline length. 
Urea injection system linkage: A urea nozzle installation position should be reserved near the DPF for NOx reduction in the SCR system.
 3. Installation of hybrid models for special models: 
Diesel hybrid vehicles: (such as Audi SQ7 TDI) may integrate DPF in the exhaust path of electric mode and fuel mode switching, and temperature  management under both conditions must be taken into account. 
New energy transition technology: 
plug-in hybrid diesel vehicles do not work in pure electric mode DPF, but still need to rely on the original installation position to complete regeneration when starting the engine
