Horny goat is a common name of the plant Epimedium sagittatum, which is native to Asia and the Mediterranean region. In the traditional Chinese medicinal system, and elsewhere, some species from the genus Epimedium have an age-old history in the management of ailments. Clearly, most of the interest in this genus can be attributed to its aphrodisiac properties; however, existing literature illustrates that this genus has much more to offer.
Chemical constitution of Epimedium Extract
Epimedium contains a number of flavonoids. 37 compounds were characterized from the underground and aerial parts of the plant. Among them, 28 compounds were prenylflavonoids. The predominant flavonoid, epimedin C, ranged from 1.4 to 5.1% in aerial parts and 1.0 to 2.8% in underground parts. Icariin is flavanol glycoside that has an inhibitory effect on human PDE-5.
