Product Description

Basic information
Common name: carbolic acid.
Chemical formula: C6H5OH.
Appearance: Pure phenol is colourless or white crystal, but common phenol is pink due to air oxidation.
Physical Properties: Melting point 43°C, boiling point 181.75°C, density 1.0576 g/cm³. Slightly soluble in water at room temperature, but when the temperature is higher than 65 ° C, and water in any proportion of mutual solubility. Phenol is soluble in ethanol, ether and other organic solvents.
Chemical Properties
Weak acidity: Phenol is a weak acid that can partially ionise hydrogen ions and phenol ions in water.
Corrosivity: Phenol is corrosive, its concentrated solution is strongly corrosive to the skin, and inadvertently stained on skin should be washed immediately with alcohol.
Reactivity: Phenol is chemically active and can react with many substances, such as with bromine water to produce a white tribromophenol precipitate, and iron chloride solution with a colour reaction (purple), used for the test of phenol.
Uses
Disinfection and antiseptic: Phenol has a broad-spectrum bactericidal effect, can effectively kill bacteria and some viruses, can be used for the disinfection of medical equipment and the environment, can also be used for skin antiseptic, antipruritic and otitis media treatment.
Industrial production: Phenol is an important raw material for the manufacture of phenolic resins, bisphenol A and other chemical products and intermediates, also used in the production of synthetic fibres, plastics and other products.
Drug synthesis: Phenol is an important raw material for the synthesis of some drugs such as aspirin.
Chemical analysis: In chemical experiments and analysis, phenol can be used to detect and quantify certain substances.
Safety
Toxicity: Phenol is toxic and can enter the human body through the skin, respiratory tract and other ways, causing harm to the human body. Prolonged exposure to or inhalation of phenol vapour may lead to poisoning with symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting and skin corrosion.
Carcinogenicity: According to the list of carcinogens published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organisation, phenol is classified as a Group 3 carcinogen, i.e., it may be carcinogenic to human beings, but the evidence is not yet sufficient.
