Food Additives Gum Base for Chewing Gum and Bubble Gum Raw Materials
Gum base is a non-nutritive, non-digestible, water-insoluble substance used as the foundation in chewing gum and bubble gum. It provides the chewable quality of gum and serves as the medium that holds all other ingredients together. Here are the main components and functions of gum base:Elastomers: These are the primary materials that give gum its elasticity. Common elastomers include natural rubber (latex) and synthetic rubbers like styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) or polyisobutylene.
Resins: Resins help provide the chewiness and binding properties of the gum. They can be natural, like terpene resins, or synthetic.
Waxes: Waxes like paraffin wax or microcrystalline wax are added to soften the gum base and improve its texture.
Fats: Fats and oils, such as vegetable oil, may be included to enhance the texture and flexibility of the gum.
Fillers: Fillers such as calcium carbonate or talc are added to improve the texture and mouthfeel of the gum.
Antioxidants: These prevent the gum base from deteriorating and extending its shelf life. Common antioxidants include butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) or butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA).
Gum base does not contain any flavors or sweeteners; these are added later in the gum manufacturing process. It is designed to be safe for chewing and remains in the mouth for extended periods without breaking down or losing its consistency.
