L-fucose is found in large quantities in seaweed and gum, but also in some bacterial polysaccharides. Fucose, as a component of sugar chain in glycoproteins, is widely distributed in the plasma membrane on the surface of various cells.Fucose has one less hydroxyl group on the sixth carbon atom than the general hexacarbonose, so fucose is less hydrophilic than other monosaccharides, but more hydrophobic.
Functions
