It is a keto carotenoid, fully known as 3,3 '- dihydroxy- β,β- Carotene-4,4 '- Dione.

*The end of the conjugated double bond chain has unsaturated ketone and hydroxyl structures, which is easy to react with and scavenge free radicals.

*Three optical isomers can be formed: left-handed (3S, 3 ´ s), racemic (3R, 3 ´ s) and right-handed (3R, 3 ´ R) structures. Only l-astaxanthin has strong antioxidant and other biological activities, and the biological activity of right-handed astaxanthin is low.
 

 

Source of Astaxanthin

1. Natural Microalgae

Rhodococcus pluvialis, naked algae and snow algae all contain natural astaxanthin. The configuration is mainly 3S, 3 ′ s
(left-handed), and the activity is high. The accumulation rate of astaxanthin in Haematococcus pluvialis was significantly higher than that of other green algae.

2. Chemical Synthesis
Synthetic astaxanthin is a mixture of 3S, 3 ′ s (left-handed, accounting for about 25%), 3R, 3 ′ R (right-handed, accounting for about 25%), and 3R, 3 ′ s (racemic, accounting for about 50%).
