Sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5) is an inorganic compound that is a white or yellow crystal with a strong irritating odor. It is soluble in water and the aqueous solution is acidic. When in contact with strong acids, it releases sulfur dioxide and generates corresponding salts. If left in the air for a long time, it will oxidize to sodium sulfate, so sodium metabisulfite cannot be stored for a long time.
Used for producing insurance powder, sulfamethoxazole, acetaminophen, caprolactam, etc; Used for the purification of chloroform, phenylpropylsulfone, and benzaldehyde.
