what is a speculum used for?
A speculum, or vaginal speculum, is used to open the vaginal walls. This allows a gynecologist to examine the health of the vagina and cervix as well as perform a Pap smear test.
A speculum shoud't hurt, but it may be uncomfortable.
The procedure is less likely to be painful if the blades of a speculum are lubricated with gel before insertion. There was once a concern that using gel would alter test results, but studies have disproven this concern.
