ASTM A333 is the standard specification given to all the welded as well as seamless steel, carbon and alloy pipes which are intended to be used at places of low temperatures. The ASTM A333 pipes are used as heat exchanger pipes and pressure vessel pipes.
As it was stated in the above section, that these pipes are used in the areas where temperature is extremely low, they are used in large ice cream industries, chemical industries and other such places. They are used as transportation pipes and are categorized into different grades. The classification of grades of these pipes is done on different factors like temperature resistance, tensile strength, yielding strength and chemical compositions. The ASTM A333 pipes are furnished into nine different grades which are designated by the following numbers:1,3,4,6.7,8,9,10, and 11.
These pipes have an NPS 2"to 36". Though different grades have different temperature strike test the average temperature that these pipes can stand is from-45 degree C, to-195 degree C. The ASTM A333 pipes must be made with the seamless or welding process where there must be no filler in the metal during the welding process.
ASTM A333 standard covers wall seamless and welded carbon and alloy steel pipe intended for use at low temperatures. ASTM A333 alloy pipe shall be made by the seamless or welding process with the addition of no filler metal in the welding operation. All seamless and welded pipes shall be treated to control their microstructure. Tensile tests, impact tests, hydrostatic tests, and nondestructive electric tests shall be made in accordance to specified requirements. Some product sizes may not be available under this specification because heavier wall thicknesses have an adverse affect on low-temperature impact properties.
ASTM A333 steel pipe production includes a series of visual surface imperfections to guarantee that they have been properly manufactured. ASTM A333 steel pipe shall be subject to rejection if surface imperfections acceptable are not scattered, but appear over a large area in excess of what is considered a workmanlike finish. The finished pipe shall be reasonably straight.
ASTM A333 Steel Pipe Surface inspection requirements
Surface imperfections that penetrate more than 12½ % of the nominal wall thickness or encroach on the minimum wall thickness shall be considered defects. ASTM A333 steel pipe with such defects shall be given one of the following dispositions:The defect may be removed by grinding provided that the remaining wall thickness is within specified limits.
Repaired in accordance with the repair welding provisions.
The section of pipe containing the defect may be cut off within the limits of requirements on length.
The defective pipe may be rejected.
Material & Manufacture
The pipe shall be made by the seamless or welding process with the addition of no filler metal in the welding operation.Heat Treatment Requirements
All seamless and welded pipe shall be treated to control their microstructure by the following methods: Normalizing per A 333/A 333M-05 section 4.3.1.1; section 4.3.1.2 or section 4.3.1.3 Quenched and Tempered per A 333/A 333M - 05 section 4.3.2.1 Double Normalized and Tempered per A 333/A 333M - 05 section 4.3.2.2Mechanical Testing
Transverse or Longitudinal Tension Test and Flattening Test, Hardness Test, or Bend Test For material heat treated in a batch-type furnace, tests shall be made on 5% of the pipe from each treated lot. For small lots, at least one pipe shall be tested. For material heat treated by the continuous process, tests shall be made on a sufficient number of pipe to constitute 5% of the lot, but in no case less than 2 pipe. Hydrostatic Test Impact Test One notched bar impact test, consisting of breaking three specimens shall be made from each heat represented in a heat-treatment load on specimens taken from the finished pipe.Lengths
Lengths required shall be specified on order. If no definite lengths required, following practice applies: Single Random - 17′ ~ 24′ lengths Double Random - 36′ ~ 44′ lengthsChemical Composition (%)
